History
The name “Duke University Blue Devils” encompasses a wide range of sports and teams including men’s and women’s tennis, golf, hockey, basketball, football, and others. The school’s athletes can claim twelve NCAA National Championships and 119 ACC Championships to their credit. As skilled and talented as all of the Duke athletes are, the school is probably best known for their men’s basketball team.
Duke University Blue Devils basketball is a tradition in the school, having been first started in the early nineteen hundreds. The team has won four NCAA Championships, twenty two conference regular season championships, twenty three Conference Tournament championships, and has been ranked number one or at least in the top twenty five by the Associated Press many times. They hold several records, and have also had many players go on to the NBA, or win other awards for accomplishments during their time with the school and the team.
The nickname “Blue Devils” was not an easy decision for the school to make. Originally known as the Trinity Eleven, the Blue and White, and the Methodists, the staff of the school paper decided that the team needed one official name to create unity. They started a campaign and narrowed the list down to just a few of the most popular entries. Blue Devils was one of the nominations, however none of the options seemed to be favored by the student body any more than the others.
Of course Blue Devils seemed somewhat controversial, making it difficult to pick that name for fear of offending everyone. Eventually it was decided the newspaper staff should choose the new name for the team and they used Blue Devils unofficially for a year to make sure there was no problem. When no opposition arose, the name was picked officially and the Duke University Blue Devils had earned their name.
Duke University Blue Devils athletes have earned their reputation in and out of the classroom. In 2006, an evaluation was conducted that showed about 91% of student athletes graduate from Duke. This is the highest number in the nation. Some say this success rate could be a result of athletes taking easier classes and simpler majors in order to graduate, although athletes and students themselves have taken offense to the allegations and claim it isn’t true.
Since the early nineteen hundreds, the Duke University Blue Devils have shown themselves a force to be reckoned with in the world of college sports. No matter the sport, and no matter the year, the Blue Devils put on a good show on the field or court as well as in the classroom. They have definitely earned their reputation and continue to keep up the efforts each and every year.
