2011 Season Outlook: The 49ers have the talent to make the playoffs but lack toughness. If new DC Vic Fangio can get his defense to defend the pass and QB Alex Smith can grasp the new offense, the team may make the playoffs ... just don't count on it.
Recap: Head Coach Mike Singletary will begin his second full season as the head man in San Francisco. The franchise ended their 7-season streak of not getting into the playoffs by posting an 8-8 record last season and they look to improve on that record in 2010.
The team had two 1st round draft picks in the 2010 NFL Draft, Rutgers T Anthony Davis (11th overall selection) and Idaho G Mike Iupati (17th overall selection). In the 2nd round, the Niners selected USC S Taylor Mays (49th overall selection). Other draft picks include LB Navarro Bowman, RB Anthony Dixon, TE Nate Byham, WR Kyle Williams and CB Phillip Adams.
The team also picked up some quality players via trade. The team sent their 2011 7th round pick to Detroit for QB Shaun Hill. The Dolphins sent WR Ted Ginn to the Niners for a 2010 5th round pick. The Denver Broncos traded their 2010 1st round pick (used to select Davis) for a 2010 1st and 4th round picks (13th and 113th overall).
