As one of the eight charter franchises, the Yankees began life in 1901 as the Baltimore Orioles before moving to the Bronx in New York City in 1903 and changing their name to the NY Highlanders. The franchise would eventually change it’s name to the monumental name they are known by now, The Yankees. The Yankees are one of the best selling tickets in MLB with over 4-million tickets sold annually since 2005.
Through the years, fans have paid big money for tickets to see legends such as Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joltin’ Joe Dimaggio, Roger Maris, Billy Martin, Don Mattingly, Derek Jeter, Jorge Posada, Andy Pettitte, Mariano Rivera, Joe Torre and Alex Rodriquez.
The Yankees have posted winning records over the last 17-seasons and have won 26 World Series Titles in their history. The team originally played in Oriole Park (1901-1902), Hilltop Park (between 1903-1912), Brush Stadium (1913-1919), The Polo Grounds-formally Brush- (1919-1922), Shea Stadium (between 1974-1975), Old Yankee Stadium (1923-1973, 1976-2008) and beginning in 2009, the Yankees move into Yankee Stadium.
The team has undergone a series of nicknames to include The Yanks, The Bronx Bombers, The Bombers, The Bronx Zoo, The Pinstripes, and even the “Evil Empire” as Red Sox President Larry Lucchino called them in an ’02 interview with the New York Times
The 2009 season marks inaugural year for Manager Joe Girardi in the new New Yankee Stadium. While the power base of the team, Jorge Posada, Hideki Matsui and A-Rod Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter remain intact the franchise made some moves acquiring C Chris Stewart from the Chicago White Sox, OF/C Eric Fryer from the Milwaukee Brewers for LHP Chase Wright. They also resigned P Andy Pettitte to a 1-year deal and 1B Mark Teixeira to an 8-year contract.
The New York Yankees are managed by Joe Girardi and coached by Tony Pena (Bench Coach), Mick Kelleher (First Base Coach), Rob Thomson (Third Base Coach), Kevin Long (Hitting Coach), Dave Eiland (Pitching Coach) and Mike Harkey (Bullpen Coach)
