2011 Season Outlook: The main problem with the Chiefs last season was Matt Cassel's subpar play. Cassel is again the starting QB and this time doesn't have Charlie Weiss to back him up anymore. His lack of arm power (14-57 attempts longer than 20 yards last season) placed him at the bottom of that category in 2010. The draft pick of WR Jonathan Baldwin will take some pressure off of ALL Pro WR Dwayne Bowe but again, the QB has to get the ball out. Defensively, the team could not stop the run and are hoping that 6th round draft pick of Jerrell Powe can help down the line. The overachieving team of 2010 is gone (along with Weis) and the schedule does not favor such a repeat of fate.
Recap: Improving on their 2009 record of 4-12 may not be as easy as it sounds. The team did have a very high draft selection which the franchise used to beef up the secondary by selecting Tennessee Safety Eric Berry. With the 2nd pick (36th overall), the team selected Mississippi RB Dexter McCluster. The biggest blight on the team is their lack of QB protection. Matt Cassel took 37 sacks in 12 games last season and even if he is not the best QB out there, running from the defense will not make him any better. The strong point of the team has to be that of RB Jamaal Charles who in the final four games of the season totaled 658 rushing yards, 13 receptions, 79 receiving yards and 4 touchdowns.
